Sidekick
To improve my character I have
- Taken out the cross eyes as it made him look to weird and fraudy eventhough he is ment to be wise.
- I have made his clothes look more rugged and old to fit the period more.
- I have made his clothes have many pockets which he puts the stone tablets in that he reads from, it gives him a sort of illegal dealer feel I think which makes him a little bit more shifty.
- I added some asymmetry to his anatomy to make his look unbalanced to give the audience a clue about his unstable personality.

Hero
With this character i have had no advice yet but to improve it I have
- Made the character a bit more cartoony to fit in with the villian and sidekick better
- I have given him a bow and arrow too, as in my original character notes I said he would carry one.
- I have put rips into his loin-cloth to fit in better with the stone era and to show he is like a hunter and a fighter that has been attacked.
Villian
To improve the character
- I have put him in a more animalistic pose to fit in with his character being brought up in the wild.
- I have given him scars and open wounds to show he has had to fight in the wild and has been battling all of his life.
- I have made his structure more bulky and powerful and strong due to his upbring in the wild and having to work hard to survive.
Hi Gary,
ReplyDeletegood stuff here - I think these are beginning to take shape nicely. Ok, some observations:
Sidekick: I really like your dodgy dealer idea. You may want to push this further.Maybe he has multiple bags, backpacks, pouches etc. To make him more shifty, think of the idea of concealment- maybe he has a cloak, animal skin, with hidden compartments, or something that hides part of his face? I think the stick idea works well, but it could probably be more organic - it looks a little too manufactured. He may even fake this injury to seem older and wiser (difficult to show, but if he was faking it, his gestures would be melodramatic as if he was overacting).
Hero - This guy looks a little too generic at the moment i feel. He is dangerously close to Tarzan, so the trick is to find something about him that is distinct - maybe tribal tattoos - more costume (sabretooth claw necklace etc) Check out 10,000 BC for some reasonable reference, although the film is pretty bad.....His build is fine - he just needs to be distinctive.
Villain: This Guy has great potential - i think the lioncloth/animal head is a pretty strong look. The anatomy is a bit off (his head should be lower and more forward) but i think keeping him in an animalistic pose is a good way to go. Rather than have him walk on all fours though, which is hard for a humanoid, I think he would be better if he was hunched over and predatory. Find a mirror and move around like you are stalking something, shoulders hunched over, ready to pounce. Maybe use more of the animal skin - maybe he wears gloves with the animals claws? Basically you need to make him seem more dangerous, so you need to introduce more sharp edges and angles.
Finally just some observations on your colour pallet - I see you are going for natural colours here, and thats very important. However, i would try and make the three characters as distinct as possible. Animal skins come in all shades, from black/purple, through shades of brown and grey, tans, orange and yellows, and whites. And for the human characters also think about their skin colour - is the villain pale, dark skinned or heavily tanned? What animals did each hunt to claim their skins?
