Brief - Character Design - 6/10/09

I refined my sidekick so you can tell more about his personality just from the look of the character. I also added colour to see a more overall outcome of what the character will look like.

  1. Hi Gary - I know - it's been a while since I posted a comment, but after a mishap with my laptop (now broken!), I lost all my links to your original blogs - so I'm just getting back up to speed; expect more in the future, not that I've found you again!

  3. Hi Gary,
The sidekick seems to coming on nicely. Here are my first thoughts:

    Props
I think you may want to think about your costume here. Is it a robe, animal skin etc I guess since this is caveman times, it should look a little more ancient - same goes for his "Book". Maybe stone tablets, ancient runes etc. When i was talking last week about designing a characters stuff to match the character, such as using similar shapes, colour etc, you can also do the reverse - use opposing shapes or designs if you want it NOT to fit. He is blagging the fact that he is a wise sage after all. Maybe you can indicate the fact that he doesnt really understand what he is carrying or wearing?

    Personality
In terms of creating a crazy character, rather than crazy eyes, you should look into more subtle approaches. After all, from how you described him, other people will think he is wise on first appearance. As I mentioned last week, by creating imbalance in the design through asymmetry, you can create an unstable personality

    Construction
I think this is an improvement on your first design - much less thuggish. I think though that you can still push the academic nature of this character - it think its a little generic. Also think about his age - from what i remember, he is meant to be old, so look at his posture -bent spine etc

    Anatomy
You may want to look at monkeys/apes anatomy to get a better idea of proportions, arm lengths, faces etc. And also bear in mind this character can use his feet to hold stuff so maybe you could incorporate that into his character, to create a more distinctive design

Anyway, i look forward to seeing more of your designs for the other 2 characters...
